Immerse yourself in Indigenous practices, including TEK, permaculture, biodynamics, and regenerative agriculture. Collaborate with experienced mentors, gaining hands-on experience in tasks like planting and harvesting. This role provides a unique opportunity to actively cultivate relationships with the land, prioritize safety, and embrace ethical growing practices. Applicants are required to have 1-2 years of farming experience/ in-home gardening experience/ ranching experience for this role and/or inherited knowledge, that they are excited to grow in. This position collaborates directly with the farm mentor on growing crops, treating the land, cultural enrichment and/or offering technical support. This candidate must be Indigenous or BIPOC + farmer.

• Season start (April) – 10 - 15 hours a week
• Peak season (May-October) – 20 hours a week
Reports to/collaborated with:
Chief Executive Director and FJS Program Weaver and Farm Mentor.
Responsibilities:
Immerse in Indigenous practices like TEK, permaculture, biodynamics, and regenerative agriculture.
Engage in physically demanding tasks such as planting, harvesting, and using farm tools.
Learn and receive guidance from an experienced farm mentor.
Work effectively in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Foster connections and engage in community building and in Indigenous cultural enrichment.
Cultivate relationships with the land and embrace a passion for regenerative farming practices.
Alignment with the values of ethical and responsible stewardship of the land.
Willing to follow directions from the farm mentor and receive feedback.
Being proactive about tasks to ensure a successful day to day operation.
Willing and able to cover shifts for the farm mentor(s), as needed.
To be reliable with time management and scheduling and attuned to the land, following the patterns
of the growing season.
Skills/abilities:
Must have (all in relation to practices like TEK, permaculture, biodynamics, regenerative agriculture, and ranching.)
1-2 years of season(s) of farming, in-home gardening or ranching required.
Ability to perform demanding tasks in food cultivation, including lifting, planting, and harvesting, with stamina for extended outdoor work, in varying weather conditions.
Eagerness to learn through hands-on training and mentorship, open to acquiring new skills and knowledge.
Alignment with values of ethical land stewardship and commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
Collaborative work with mentors and participants, fostering positive relationships in a team-oriented
garden environment.
• Respect for diversity, openness to working with individuals from various backgrounds, and
contribution to a supportive learning environment.
• Strong communication skills to convey complex agricultural concepts effectively, as well as
experience fostering a good collaborative workspace. This means being responsive and able to work
within diverse team dynamics.
• Regular check ins with Farm Mentor.
• Must also be able to communicate in a timely manner across various platforms.
Willing to learn/Nice to have
• Eagerness to participate in planting, harvesting, and maintaining crops with a basic understanding of
crop management principles.
• Tech savvy towards different platforms of communication, like WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams. Able
to map under permaculture knowledge.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Experience/Education:
Alignment with ethical land stewardship and commitment to promoting environmentally friendly practices, including TEK, permaculture, biodynamics, and regenerative agriculture.
Could be an intern / student in any of the fields listed above.
Physical Requirements:
Perform physically demanding tasks (planting, harvesting, operating farm tools) for extended periods.
Work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, sun), and heat exposure.
Strength and dexterity for lifting, carrying heavy objects, bending, squatting, and kneeling.
Physical fitness and agility to navigate uneven terrain.
Work effectively and safely with farm machinery and equipment.
Willingness to engage in repetitive motions and manual labor in gardening activities.
